The Vermenagna Valley and the neighbouring ones were places of encounter between the various extranational organ schools. In memory of this, since 2002 the International Festival “Organi Storici – La Route Royale Des Orgues, un patrimonio da ascoltare” has been organized by SIVOM, with the sponsorship of the Conseil Départemental des Alpes Maritimes, of the European Community and supported, as regards the Italian part by the Municipalities of Limone Piemonte, Roccavione, Borgo San Dalmazzo, Airole and Torri, while for the French part by the Municipalities of Sospel, Breil sur Roya, Fontan, Saorge, La Brigue and Tende.
The organs located within the city churches were, as a rule, assets of considerable and undisputed economic and social value. The organ was even often presented as an object of public sovereignty; monument, symbol and image of a town.
The location of the Valley opened and closed this art at the same time. Transalpine exchanges, trafficking and migration processes are elements of fertility in a border area, careful to filter different experiences to make them their own. The symbols of this scenario are the organs: instruments influenced by the itinerant artisan figures that created them, a mobility typical of the artistic professions of the time. In the valley there are two important historical examples that are still present: Roccavione and Limone Piemonte.
